4th Six Weeks: Poetry and Non-Fiction Text

Greetings NIAA Parents!
Heading into 2nd Semester, we have as always a full schedule of class work and events.

POETRY: Students understand, make inferences and draw conclusions about the structure and elements of poetry and provide evidence from text to support their understanding as well as make complex inferences about text and use textual evidence to support understanding. (TEKS)

Week 1-3
Both English I and II will read, analyze and discuss traditional poetry and then we will take a look at new poets and styles and methods of creating poetry, with awesome visual ideas:
Blackout Poetry and

          Asemic Art-featuring poetry

Week 3-6
Non-fiction text will cover biographies, memoirs, speeches and creative non-fiction. For great creative non-fiction articles see:
The American Scholar
Creative NonFiction
Creative Non Fiction for Teens

HOMEWORK
Students will have 4 reading logs to complete this six weeks, the complete schedule of due dates are located on ClassJump. The purpose of reading logs is to 1. help further develop the reading fluency of all students, 2. hone research skills (knowing how to locate information via online sources will be a necessity for post-secondary education) and 3. build a sense of responsibility (being able to meet required deadlines is another necessary skill for post-secondary pursuits) and finally 4. keep abreast of what is going on both locally and internationally in our world.
I appreciate all of the parental encouragement my students have had thus far. Students awarded "current event quiz" prizes will have a homework pass for 1 reading log! Next current event quiz will be at the end of the 4th six weeks.
